Cafe-hopping might be one of the most expensive things for youths like us. Some say it can cost them a fortune while others say it’s just a way to de-stress and pampering their taste buds every once in a while is fine.

For 23-year-old, Soraya Abdul Majid or better known as Sam, a year three Biotechnology student in Republic Polytechnic, cafe-hopping has become a hobby. It has become a routine for her to visit at least one cafe per month and she finds joy in being able to explore all the different types of cafe available in Singapore. Despite coming from an average income family and not having a part-time job, Sam has managed to keep her hobby for cafe-hopping very much alive. |
Her favorite cafe as of now would be Penny University. Her standard meal would consist of a drink, main course and a dessert. Her favourites would be Cafe Latte, Cheesie Toastie with Marmite and Poached Eggs and Ritter Sport Choc Cornflakes.
She sacrificed her spendings for school meals and picked an alternative of home-cooked food. She puts aside $40 every month for these cafe visits from a monthly allowance of only $200. Sometimes, when money is unavailable, she would only eat two nutella sandwiches the whole day and only have a proper meal once she goes home after school at about 8pm. When really hungry, she’ll only spend $5 for her meals in school. She chooses to walk to school and also back home just to budget herself down.
She finds cafe-hopping as an important hobby in her life as she uses this cafes as inspiration. She writes short stories and even draws based on the cafe’s settings. The cafes are seen as a muse for her. She spends at most 5 hours in the cafe even though she wish she could stay there forever. Money for shopping, seeing as that she’s a girl, with only be put aside to the maximum amount of $50 a month. For a passion and hobby, Sam has managed to juggle her allowance to fit her needs. She has definitely made an impression on us and therefore might become a role model to all future cafe-hopping lovers.
